Shortly after graduating college with a journalism degree, I was hired for my first job – but not as a writer. I have always been aware of Sports Collectors Digest in the little city of Iola, Wis., and after I found out that the publishing company Krause Publications was starting a card grading division, it was a no-brainer that I should give it a whirl. In the summer of 2001, I became the company’s first hire as a card grader for SCD Authentic. Full story

silver eagle coinCOINS Take Note of the Scarcity Factor
Time to step back to get a bit philosophical. The topic is something that used to be taken for granted. Coin collectors have always known that not all coins are available to buy at all times. Collectors need to be ready to pay up when they find something truly extraordinary.   This expectation, as I say, used to be taken for granted. For some reason, it does not seem so now.  Full story

When to Use an Appraiser: Your Options
Many people will find themselves cleaning out an attic or garage this spring and looking at things that were inherited, or bought at yard sales, flea markets or antique stores and wondering, “what is this worth and how do I sell it?”  The American Society of Appraisers offers advice to people who want to sell their antiques and collectibles. Collecting 101: Grading Your Records
Nothing is more important in determining the value of your records than their condition! Yes, their relative rarity and demand is important, but a collector or dealer will pay much more for a record in Near Mint (NM) condition than one in Very Good Minus (VG-) condition. However, I’ve found that most people with collections or accumulations have an inflated sense of the condition of their discs.  Full story

When is it a coin?
Reading the mail that comes in, both on snailback and to my e-mail address, there obviously is some confusion about mints and minting and what constitutes a coin. By definition, a coin is an object, almost always metal, issued by a governing body that has the legal right to make and distribute money. Full story
